2026 BMW X5 Unveiled: Bigger, Smarter, More Powerful Than Before
German luxury carmaker
BMW has unveiled the fifth-generation X5, bringing a redesigned exterior, a
completely new cabin and the widest range of powertrains ever offered on the
luxury SUV. The 2026 BMW X5 line-up spans petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid variants
alongside the first-ever all-electric iX5, with a hydrogen-powered version
confirmed to join later.
The new 2026 BMW X5 adopts the Bavarian firm's
Neue Klasse design language while retaining familiar SUV proportions, and gets
BMW's latest Panoramic iDrive display system inside. Production of the BMW X5
will begin at the Spartanburg plant in the USA in August, ahead of a global
market launch.
2026 BMW X5: Exterior Design
The 2026 BMW X5's front end is taller and more upright, with a redesigned illuminated kidney grille flanked by new "double-X" LED light signatures. BMW says the units combine daytime running lights, indicators and low-beam headlights into a single element. Adaptive LED headlights with cornering lights, matrix high beam and non-dazzling "Selective Beam" tech come as standard. From the side, the SUV gets flush-fitting windows and new electrically operated "BMW Winglet" door handles integrated into the B- and C-pillars. At the rear are slimmer LED tail-lamps and a wider stance. The M60e xDrive gets a more aggressive look, while M Sport and M Sport Pro packages continue. Buyers can choose from 11 exterior colours and 21- to 23-inch wheels.
The X5 measures 4,994mm long and 2,000mm wide,
with a 3,035mm wheelbase. Boot space stands at 655 litres, expanding to 1,850
litres with the rear seats folded, while plug-in hybrid variants offer
525-1,680 litres.
2026 BMW X5: Interior And Features
The 2026 BMW X5's cabin gets a new dashboard layout with fewer physical controls, built around
BMW's Panoramic iDrive display that spans the base of the windscreen, a
17.9-inch central touchscreen, a 3D head-up display and an optional passenger
display. A redesigned steering wheel is also part of the update.
New trim options include optional slate and glass
accents with extended ambient lighting. Other highlights include a standard
panoramic glass roof, sports seats, optional ventilated and massaging front
seats, soft-close electric doors, wireless charging, over-the-air updates and a
Bowers & Wilkins sound system with Dolby Atmos. Four-zone climate control
is available, and rear passengers get their own climate touchscreen.
The SUV gets BMW's
latest Level 2 driver assistance suite, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, highway and urban driving assist, parking assist, and automatic
emergency braking, alongside multiple airbags and electronic stability control.
2026 BMW X5: Powertrains
The 2026 BMW X5 becomes the first BMW model
offered with five distinct drive systems: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid,
battery-electric and, later, hydrogen fuel-cell. The line-up comprises the X5
40 xDrive petrol, X5 40d xDrive diesel, X5 50e xDrive and X5 M60e xDrive
plug-in hybrids, and the all-electric iX5 60 xDrive.
The X5 40 xDrive uses
a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol six-cylinder with 48V mild-hybrid assistance, making
400hp and 580Nm, while the X5 40d xDrive diesel makes 313hp and 670Nm. The X5
50e xDrive PHEV combines a 3.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for
489hp and 700Nm, while the range-topping M60e xDrive makes 612hp and 800Nm.
Both PHEVs offer an electric-only WLTP range of up to 102km and support up to
11kW AC charging.
2026 BMW X5: Battery, Charging, Range & Performance
The iX5 runs a 141kWh
battery pack on an 800V architecture, using new cylindrical cells fitted for
the first time in this model. Its dual-motor setup produces 578hp and 805Nm,
with a claimed 0-100kph time of 4.6 seconds and a 210kph top speed. BMW claims
a WLTP range of up to 845km, with DC fast charging up to 460kW enabling a 10-80
percent charge in 23 minutes. The iX5 also supports 22kW AC charging and
bidirectional charging.
Adaptive suspension is
standard across the range, with Adaptive Chassis Control and adaptive air
suspension available on select variants. Also showcased was the upcoming iX5
Hydrogen, which is expected to use a fuel cell system paired with BMW's Hydrogen
Flat Storage tech, with the Bavarian firm targeting a range of up to 750km.
2026 BMW X5: Production And Launch Timeline
Production of the fifth-generation X5 beginsat BMW's Spartanburg plant in the USA in August 2026, marking the first time an
