Vietnam’s EV Giant Enters India, Opens Plant in Tamil Nadu

Vietnam’s well-known electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast has inaugurated its first electric car assembly plant in Thoothukudi (Tuticorin), Tamil Nadu. This is VinFast’s first assembly facility outside Vietnam, marking a significant step in the company's global expansion journey.

Production of VinFast EVs in India:

In the initial phase, VinFast will assemble two premium electric SUV models – the VF 6 and VF 7 – at this new facility. These models have been specially designed for the Indian market.

  • VF 6: VF 6:l electric SUV offering a range of around 400 kilometers on a full charge.
  • VF 7: A compact SUV with a driving range of up to 450 kilometers.

Both models are now available for pre-booking at ₹21,000.

In its initial phase, the VinFast electric vehicle (EV) plant in Tamil Nadu will produce 50,000 vehicles annually, with plans to scale up capacity to 1,50,000 units per year in the future. Spread across 400 acres, the facility is equipped with advanced machinery and cutting-edge technology.

This plant is expected to play a major role in establishing Tamil Nadu as a significant EV manufacturing hub in both India and South Asia. It will also boost local businesses and generate thousands of employment opportunities.

VinFast has invested $500 million (approximately ₹4,000 crore) in the first phase and plans a total investment of $2 billion over time. According to reports, the plant is projected to create 3,000 to 3,500 jobs.

VinFast’s Expansion Plans in India

VinFast has identified India as a key market for its global expansion. The company has already opened pre-bookings for its VF 6 and VF 7 electric SUVs, with a fully refundable booking amount of ₹21,000.

In addition, VinFast plans to open 35 dealerships in over 27 cities across India by the end of 2025. The company has already launched its first showroom in Surat, Gujarat, where customers can view and book the VF 6 and VF 7 EVs.
