Formula E organizers have officially announced the cancellation of the upcoming 2024 Hyderabad E-Prix. News of the race being canceled emerged last week. Formula E stated that after obtaining a letter, it sought "immediate clarification" from the newly elected government of Telangana, which was elected in the state assembly elections at the end of last year. With less than six weeks remaining for the scheduled race on February 10, 2024, Formula E confirmed the breakdown of negotiations with the new state government.
In a statement, Formula E said, "This race will not take place," referring to the decision by the Telangana government's Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department (MAUD) not to fulfill the signed host city agreement on October 30, 2023.
Contractual Violation
The statement mentioned, "Formula E Operations (FEO) has no option other than formally notifying MAUD to terminate the contract. FEO is deliberating on its course of action and what steps it can take under the Host City Agreement and applicable laws. All rights of FEO in this regard are reserved and protected.
"The first Hyderabad E-Prix was held on the shores of Hussain Sagar Lake in February last year, marking the arrival of the World Championship to Indian soil. The government and organizers had signed a multi-year agreement after several years of negotiations, ensuring the return of racing to the city. The inaugural Hyderabad E-Prix saw participation from over 31,000 spectators, and Formula E had initially stated that the race weekend had a positive economic impact of nearly 84 million dollars on the region. While the street circuit received praise from teams and drivers, organizational and infrastructure issues remained a concern."
