GST Cut Fuels Car Sales: Maruti Suzuki Leads, Mahindra & Others See Big Growth
By CarVaidyaIndia is the world’s third-largest car market, and 2025 turned out to be a strong year for the Indian automobile industry. On one hand, Maruti Suzuki emerged as the country’s largest car manufacturer, while Mahindra and Tata Motors also showcased the strength of homegrown brands.
Following a GST update, car prices dropped sharply. The Indian government reduced the tax rate from 28% to 18% on vehicles under 4 metres in length with petrol engines up to 1.5 litres or diesel engines up to 1.2 litres. As a result, car sales saw a significant surge from September onwards. Let’s take a look at the top five carmakers of 2025.
Maruti Suzuki continues to rule the Indian car market. In CY 2025, the company sold a total of 1,806,515 new vehicles. This marks a year-on-year growth of 9.21% compared to 1,639,978 units sold in CY 2024. With this performance, Maruti Suzuki captured a market share of 42.86%.
Mahindra secured the second position on the list. The company gained 625,603 new customers in 2025, registering a strong annual growth of 21.64% over 490,169 units sold in CY 2024. Mahindra’s overall market share stood at 14.84%.
Tata Motors ranked third in terms of sales. The company gained a total of 578,772 new customers in 2025. This represents a year-on-year growth of 7% compared to 538,221 units sold in CY 2024. With this performance, Tata Motors secured a market share of 13.73%.
Hyundai took the fourth position on the list. The popular carmaker sold 571,878 new vehicles in CY 2025. This reflects a modest year-on-year growth of 2.07% compared to 559,984 units sold in CY 2024. As a result, Hyundai’s market share stood at 13.57%.
Toyota retained its place in the top five, driven by strong growth. The company gained 351,580 new customers in 2025, recording an impressive year-on-year increase of 26.42% over 258,684 units sold in CY 2024. Despite this sharp rise in sales, Toyota’s overall market share remained at 8.34%.
