Tata Motors Targets 20% Market Share by FY31

Tata Motors Targets 20% Market Share by FY31

New Delhi, September 30, 2026: Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) is intensifying its growth strategy in the Indian passenger vehicle market, with the company targeting a 20% market share by FY31. The automaker expects to cross the 15% market-share mark soon and plans to achieve the next phase of growth through new vehicle segments, faster product updates and a wider range of powertrains.

The company has set an ambition to increase annual passenger-vehicle sales to more than 1.2 million units by FY31, compared with around 640,000 units in FY26. The strategy comes as Tata looks to strengthen its position across SUVs, electric vehicles, CNG models and other emerging vehicle categories.

Tata Motors Nears 15% Market Share

According to Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles MD and CEO Shailesh Chandra, the company is already very close to 15% domestic market share and expects to cross that level soon.

Chandra said the company has grown by nearly 40% over the past year, while EVs were accounting for more than 25% of its sales as of the end of September 2026. He said reaching the next five percentage points of market share will be the focus of the coming five years.

Tata's FY31 objective is therefore not simply to maintain its current position but to add substantial volume through a broader product portfolio and faster product development.

20% Market Share Target by FY31

Tata Motors has previously outlined its ambition of reaching 20% market share and more than 1.2 million annual sales by FY31. At its 2026 Investor Day, the company said it was building towards sustained growth momentum and a 20% market share in the next phase of its expansion. The company sold around 640,000 passenger vehicles in FY26. For perspective, Tata Motors PV's FY26 market share was reported at around 13.02%, compared with 13.42% for Mahindra & Mahindra and 39.71% for Maruti Suzuki, based on VAHAN data cited by Business Today. This means Tata needs to expand its share by several percentage points while also significantly increasing absolute sales volumes.

New Car Segments Will Be a Major Growth Area

One of Tata Motors' key strategies is entering vehicle segments where it currently has limited or no presence. Shailesh Chandra highlighted segments such as MPVs and certain lifestyle SUVs as potential areas for expansion. The company also plans to identify new "white spaces" where changing customer preferences and affordability can create opportunities for new products.

This strategy could allow Tata to reach customers beyond its existing SUV and hatchback portfolio.

15 Nameplates Planned by FY31

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles is also planning a substantial expansion of its product range. The company plans to have around 15 nameplates by FY31, including six new nameplates, along with more than 20 facelifts and product refreshes. The objective is to cover more parts of the Indian passenger-vehicle market and keep existing products competitive.

Faster product interventions are becoming increasingly important as Indian buyers have more choices across SUVs, EVs and premium compact vehicles.

EV and CNG to Play a Bigger Role

Electric vehicles and CNG models are expected to be important contributors to Tata's future volume growth. Tata Motors currently has a strong EV presence in India, with an EV portfolio covering multiple price points. The company has said it wants to continue strengthening its EV range while maintaining its leadership position in the segment. CNG is another important growth area. According to Tata's strategy, EVs and CNG vehicles are expected to contribute significantly to incremental volumes, with the company's multi-powertrain strategy being a major lever for growth. The company has also indicated that EVs and CNG could grow faster than the overall passenger-vehicle industry.

Manufacturing Capacity to Rise to 1.3 Million Units

Higher sales will require additional manufacturing capacity. Tata Motors plans to increase annual production capacity from around 900,000 units to approximately 1.3 million units within two to three years, according to its FY31 roadmap. The company has also started production at its Panapakkam facility in Tamil Nadu, adding to its manufacturing footprint. The additional capacity is intended to support the company's higher volume ambitions and provide flexibility for new products and powertrain options.

Sales and Service Network Expansion

Tata Motors is also planning to expand its retail and after-sales network alongside its product offensive. The company plans to increase its sales network from 1,669 outlets in FY26 to around 3,200 by FY31. Service touchpoints are planned to rise from about 1,211 to more than 3,000 during the same period. A larger network could help Tata reach customers in more Tier-2, Tier-3 and smaller markets, while improving access to servicing and after-sales support.

₹33,000–₹35,000 Crore Investment Plan

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles has outlined an investment of approximately ₹33,000–₹35,000 crore between FY26 and FY30 across its passenger vehicle and electric vehicle businesses. The investment is expected to support new products, EV technology, manufacturing capacity, powertrain development and other growth initiatives. The company is also targeting a double-digit EBITDA margin, showing that the growth strategy is intended to focus on profitability as well as volume expansion.

What This Means for Indian Car Buyers

If Tata Motors executes this roadmap, Indian buyers could see a much broader Tata portfolio over the next few years. The company is looking at new segments, more EV and CNG options, quicker model updates and products covering more price points.

The strategy also signals that competition in India's passenger-vehicle market is likely to remain intense, particularly in SUVs and electric vehicles.

For Tata, the immediate milestone is crossing 15% market share, while the longer-term objective is reaching 20% by FY31 and selling more than 1.2 million passenger vehicles annually. The company says new segments, product interventions and multi-powertrain offerings will be central to achieving that target.
