Tata Motors is set to
launch its most luxurious electric vehicle, the Avinya, in 2027. The upcoming
premium EV is expected to utilise a platform sourced from the Chery-JLR
ecosystem, a move that could accelerate development timelines while helping
reduce production costs.
Tata Avinya EV To Be Based on Chery-JLR Platform
The Avinya is one of
Tata Motors' most well-known concept vehicles and represents the brand's vision
for future premium electric mobility. Several design elements first showcased
on the Avinya concept have already found their way into newer Tata models,
including the Sierra SUV.
Tata Motors owns the JLR Group, and the Avinya was
initially planned to be based on JLR's Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA)
platform. However, in an effort to improve competitiveness and speed up
development, the company has reportedly decided to utilise the Freelander
platform developed jointly by Chery and JLR under the CJLR partnership.
The prototype of the
Avinya is expected to be unveiled later this year, with its market launch
anticipated in 2027. Adopting the Chery-JLR's Freelander EV platform will
enable Tata Motors to share key components, electronics, software, and other
critical systems, helping smooth development and manufacturing.
Why Chery-JLR Platform?
China's electric
vehicle ecosystem is widely regarded as one of the most cost-effective and
advanced in the world. The country remains a global leader in EV technology and
is a major supplier of batteries, software solutions, and automotive supply
chains. Using the Chery-JLR ecosystem could allow Tata Motors to localise
several components and electronic systems which reduces costs.
As a result, Avinya's series production could
become significantly more cost-efficient, enabling Tata Motors to price the
vehicle competitively within the premium electric SUV segment. The Avinya brand
is expected to expand into multiple body styles, including a large three-row
electric SUV.
Tata Motors has recently commenced production
at its Chennai manufacturing facility, and this plant is also expected to play
a key role in producing future Avinya-branded vehicles. Chery currently
supplies platforms, components, and battery technologies to numerous automotive
manufacturers worldwide.
The company is also a supply partner for JSW
Motor, which is expected to introduce rebadged versions of Jetour electric SUVs
in India. These models are likely to be imported and assembled at JSW's
manufacturing facility in Maharashtra.
