The cost of obtaining PUC certificate is about to increase

The Delhi Transport Department is preparing to deliver a significant blow to car drivers. Now, getting a PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate in Delhi could become more expensive. The Transportation Department has proposed an increase in the fee for PUC certificates. If this happens, there could be an increase of up to 80 percent in the fee. According to sources, the rates for PUC certificates were last increased in 2011. However, the fine for vehicles without a certificate has already been increased earlier. The proposal from the Transportation Department has been received by Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot, and he is currently considering it.

It is noteworthy that obtaining a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate is mandatory for all vehicles running on petrol, diesel, CNG, and LPG, whether they are cars, bikes, or commercial vehicles. In the event that a vehicle does not have a PUC certificate, a provision for a fine of 10,000 rupees exists.

As per the Motor Vehicles Act of 1989, it is mandatory to obtain a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate for every new vehicle registration after one year. For four-wheelers compliant with Bharat Stage 4 (BS-4) and higher emission standards, the validity of the PUC certificate is one year. For all other vehicles, the validity is three months.

A large number of vehicles in the city do not possess Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, according to the transportation department's statistics. Approximately 85 percent of vehicles in the city are operating without a valid PUC certificate. However, a significant portion of these non-compliant vehicles includes two-wheelers.

In the capital, there are more than 97 lakh registered vehicles. Among these, there are 27.8 lakh cars and 69.8 lakh two-wheelers. However, 22 lakh vehicles do not have a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. Despite strict regulations, according to official sources, people are not paying fines. Now, to enforce compliance, stringent rules will be implemented, and fines will be collected from individuals who do not adhere to the regulations.
